âI will not ask you again, Alpha Phillip, you and your son need to be more respectful of the process of our Council. The next time you interrupt proceedings we will forfeit this application and move on to the next item on the agenda. Do I make myself clear?â Alpha Thomas snarls loudly, his voice fills the large room. He speaks at a volume that silences all the arguing Alphas.
His glare is full of dominance and lesser shifters, including myself, cower under it. And he isnât even looking at me.
The tension in the room hangs heavy. When I finally fight through his compulsion, I see that the eyes of the other alphas have moved from me to the Alpha of the Blackall Pack and his son. Exactly where their attention should be.
I shift uncomfortably on my seat, my leg jitters anxiously. Theyâve been running over the same argument, talking about the same questions for the past hour. This whole hearing feels like a game of good cop, bad cop when any of the Alphas question me, which isnât as often as it should be. As we expected, Daneâs vote has been vetoed and heâs not permitted in any discussion but he is allowed to sit in on the hearing.
My she-wolf is starting to feel trapped. Benjamin just sits staring at me, so much hate and ownership in his eyes. I canât even look at that side of the table anymore. Instead, I keep my focus either on the table centrepiece, or Dane.
Even without knowing it, Dane tugs the sleeves of the crisp white shirt that Cardell sent. If you put them in a row, they would be dressed the same. Right down to the smart dress shoes. I wish I had taken a photo of them standing together. Iâm dragged out of my daydream when Daneâs impatience morphs into brittle aggression.
His jaw clenches, as my old Alpha again asks the Council to consider everyone to be allowed to view Benjamin's bite. And once again, the table erupts into discussions about what is appropriate evidence. They keep skipping over the fact that itâs my body. And I am loud and clear at how uncomfortable I feel when they talk about my body. This is what I was so scared of. They canât see me, let alone hear me.
âMiss Raine, explain again why you ran from the Blackall Pack and didnât advise your Alpha of your ascension?â One of the Alphas asks. I forgot their names as soon as they said them.
I stare at the ground. My she-wolf is getting more and more restless in our bond. I canât even drag my eyes off the table anymore, I feel sick to my stomach and my thoughts are telling me to get out of here.
âYou got this, love. If we need to sit here and tell them the same damn thing every hour for the next two days, thatâs what we will do. Gerry and I are right beside you.â Henry leans over from behind me, as he whispers into my ear.
